What Is And What Should Never Be All Hell Breaks Loose Pt. 1 All Hell Breaks Loose Pt. 2

Let's see what triggers the meter or the applause this season!

S2 - Ep 1 "In My Time Of Dying"

KUDOS AWARD: Bravo for having Dean be the most injured in this one, since he was sitting at the point of the most impact.  The writers also had the smarts to show Dean on full life support for his condition; so many (non-medical) shows don't. Dean should have been in a hospital gown, but sometimes with severe trauma patients, you can't really concentrate on proper hospital clothing, when the patient is in very fragile condition, so we can give that a pass. 1. Unfortunately, the medical scenarios take a dive later. Of course this show is not a medical program, but the frustrating thing about this episode, is that they do the right thing when John drops dead (a pox on them for killing him off, by the way!), yet they used the defib paddles for Dean!  Both of them should have been given C.P.R., since both were in cardiac arrest. The defibrillator paddles are just that - to reverse fibrillation. (unstable and/or irregular heartbeat) The paddles are an attempt to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm, not revive it from arrest.  Looks really cool onscreen but it's very wrong.  It's also dangerous, since now anyone can buy a defib kit of their own, and may not read the directions properly.  In a hospital setting, you don't even have to do the compressions or the breathing treatments for C.P.R.; there are machines for both.  The purpose of C.P.R. is to keep the brain alive, not to revive the heart, but while they were keeping the brain alive, they could have been administering various drug therapies to revive the heart. Further, even a guy John's age would have been worked on for hours, not minutes, but that's a typical error, even on medical shows. 2. Grammar nit: The Reaper says, "I can't make you come with me, but you're not getting back in your body; that's just facts" - terrible English!  She mentions two things, then she uses a plural subject in her next line.  She should have said, "Those are just the facts."

S2 - Ep 2 "Everybody Loves A Clown"

1. The scene with the dwarf, while hilarious, didn't ring true. "Little" is currently the adjective of choice, from what we've seen. We know why the blind guy was stirring things up, but the dwarf seemed to be overly combative. Best thing about this one?  Introduction of "Ash". 2. But getting back to the opening scene: While we the audience understand the necessity of burning John's body, it's never really explained how they get the body.  A patient who dies in the hospital will have a chain-of-custody, that is difficult to circumvent, without the cooperation of several people. Sam and Dean could not impersonate hospital staff and get that body out of there, either. But even with that aside, incinerating a human body would take a very long time, and constant addition of accelerant, especially if done with regular, rather than intense, focused heat. (such as a kiln or crematorium)  It's hard to believe nobody would ever catch them doing that.

S2 - Ep 3 "Bloodlust"

1. Crazy "Gordon Walker" - FYI it's pronounced "bruh" not "bro".  2. Like "Daniel Elkins", Gordon goes after an entire nest of vampires alone.  Both of these guys are supposed to be vampire experts. It just doesn't make sense that "Gordon" would turn down help from the Winchester boys. Stunt casting: Amber Benson of "Buffy" as "Lenore".  Cute.

S2 - Ep 4 "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things"

1. "Angela" is the type of driver who gets others killed, not herself. This guy resurrects her, and she looks like she's still decomposing.  Couldn't have been a long-term relationship at all - and what about the smell? There's no mention of that yutz, "Neil", being a necrophiliac, but he would have to be. This episode is reminiscent of the cult film, "Chiller" about a guy who is resurrected from cryonic storage, however, had already shed his soul, rendering him heartless and, well...cold.  We suspect the writer of this episode has seen that little-known TV movie.  Unlike that character, "Angela" was a lot more focused in her attacks.  Who could blame her for wanting those two dead?  Indirectly, they were the cause of her death - this is not a justification, but certainly understandable. Within the mythology of this show, perhaps we're to assume the dark magic that brought "Angela" back stripped her inhibitions?  Or, maybe "Neil's" feelings toward the cheating friend and boyfriend may have been a factor in "Angela's" demeanor.  That's a big stretch, though.  It's not clear whether "Angela's" soul is gone, or what.  Dean refers to her as a "zombie" but she doesn't fit the lore on that.  Zombies supposedly cannot think for themselves.

S2 Ep 5 "Simon Said"

1. Putting aside that this is not typical hypnotic suggestion, (demon-powered hypnosis, so to speak), it seems unlikely that the twin boys' mother wouldn't yell in pain, despite the control psycho-boy held over her. It's a reflex, not a conscious decision. 2. Note the really P.C. identification Sam gave for the doctor, the "older guy". It's okay to say the race when trying to describe someone, dude. 3. Biggest nit?  The old evil twin plot. Very old plot. 4. "Andy's" gift of suggestion isn't sufficient to gloss over the death of his dirtbag brother.  Anyone who watches forensic TV shows can tell you that no matter what witnesses or the cops say, the coroner would come up with the proper conclusion - that he was shot at close range, and that the angle is not possible for self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Any death involving a weapon is investigated. Period. "Andy" would have to push a lot of people, and do so constantly, so...

S2 Ep 6 "No Exit"

1. The corporeal spirit of a serial killer keeps snatching girls, and it doesn't make the news?  Not likely. Only happens very intermittently, according to "Jo", but it would still ring a bell in the police records. The Zodiac killer is probably long dead, but that case is apparently still open. With each disappearance, the place the victim was last seen would be the first stop for cops. 2. As for the ghost, how the heck is he dragging these women with one hand?  He doesn't even come all the way out of the vent.  This ghost is so corporeal, he can be sealed in cement? Here we go again:

S2 Ep 7 "The Usual Suspects"

1. Every other ghost on this show can attack, or otherwise make physical contact with the living, so why can't "Claire" do the same thing?  She should have been able to smack down the guy who killed her. Sam breathes on a glass table to see a message apparently written by "Claire" - she's manipulating a lot of things in this ep (printers, and seemingly anything), but can't kill "bad cop"? 2. "Diana" and other cops think these guys are killers, but do not even speculate that they may have killed their dad (of course they didn't, but still). 3. Sam's "memories" of "Anthony Giles" could have been very easily disproved. Cops certainly have access to military records, so that lie was a thin one.  A seasoned burglar like Dean simply wouldn't have made the mistake of touching that woman; whether cops are already there or not. He would have been arrested anyway, but not "red-handed". 4. What police department has an interrogation room with a window? Even if it did, shouldn't there be bars? 5. Talk about denial; "Diana" sees vivid manifestations, and doubts Dean is telling the truth?  Even with the bruises, and Dean giving Sam up. 6. Rogue cop "Pete" could not have just grabbed Dean and taken off, with no backup, especially since Dean was considered dangerous. There would also be a great deal of paperwork that would have to be presented before he got his hands on Dean in the first place. That's a hole you can drive a semi through.  7. "Diana" could not have easily covered up the shooting of her partner, especially since the only other two witnesses were not available to corroborate her report. But then, none of them would have found themselves in that situation in the first place. Well, you know:

S2 Ep 8 "Crossroad Blues"

1. Some liberties were taken with the legend of Robert Johnson, but only minor ones.  The demon who makes the deal with Johnson was female here, but supposedly male according to the legend. This version shows the doctor being torn to shreds as she's dragged to Hell, but there was not a scratch on Johnson at the time of his death. Later we're told he choked to death on his own blood. Though in the opening shots, there is no suggestion of "Hell hounds" or blood in Johnson's death scenario.  It's an odd inconsistency for this episode; why wouldn't they all die the way Johnson did, if this is supposed to be the same scenario? 2. The crossroads demon girl knows who Dean is (an apparently legendary hunter among her fellow demons), yet she falls for his trap? (almost fell for the car trap) Further, why would she believe he'd sell his soul to save a random person?

S2 Ep 9 "Croatoan"

1. This episode borrows very heavily from the film, "The Thing" but the biggest nit with this one is the absence of investigators. These townspeople certainly would be missed by family and friends, and the authorities would have to see what happened. 2. Minor spoiler here: It's fairly obvious that "Azazel" (his name is revealed in a season 3 ep) left that big hint, "Croatoan" carved on the tree, for Sam and Dean to find, which actually should have made them more suspicious, in light of Sam's vision. 3. Why would a medical facility's door lock from the outside (Sam being locked in by Dean)? 4. One of us is a lab tech, who says you cannot definitively see sulfur under a microscope (you may incidentally be able to identify it).  It's most identifiable by chemical testing (in a vial) or odor (rotten eggs). 5. "Duane" says "Nothing left behind" - are we to assume he went back to kill the doctor?  She appeared to have left on her own.

S2 Ep 10 "Hunted"

1. Crazy "Gordon Walker" is back, and as cold-blooded as ever. Not many complaints for this one, except it was pretty dumb of them to leave Gordon untied, despite Sam's having called the police.

S2 Ep 11 "Playthings"

1. Here we go with the "Supernatural" female presuming they're gay thing. (see "Bugs" nits - no pun intended)  Suggesting they're "antiquers" isn't inappropriate, though. That hotel doesn't look like a place two guys would choose randomly. 2. Here's another case where the cops are quite incompetent.  The mysterious deaths apparently aren't being investigated much. The deaths are very suspicious at best. 3. This episode harkens back to the first season ep, "Dead In The Water" - the spirit was able to drown everyone else, including a very strong young man in a sink, yet Sam was able to pull "Andrea" out of the tub full of water. In this one, a spirit not only managed to nearly drown "Tyler" but simultaneously keep the pool house doors shut. 4. How does "Rose" manage to become a little girl after death?  Maybe we're to assume "Maggie" somehow did it. By the way, that trick is a pretty blatant ripoff of the Star Trek episode "The Menagerie" (AKA "The Cage")

S2 Ep 12 "Nightshifter"

1. This one is too similar to "Croatoan" as it's another "who can you trust?" episode. The interesting parts for us were the introduction of "Henriksen", as well as the way the boys escaped. Unfortunately that's all...

S2 Ep 13 "Houses Of The Holy"

1. Anytime one ventures into religion, there are easy targets for criticism.  From a religious standpoint, the only complaint we have is that the priest said, "Men can't be angels" - that conflicts with many teachings, but isn't a major nit.  What is more disturbing is that anyone who claims to believe in the divine could believe a deity would want them to kill. It also is unlikely that a priest (either dead or alive) would believe it's his job to kill.  2. Another inconsistency is that the Winchesters use holy water as acid on the demons.  Why would holy water harm demons, if it weren't divine? It simply does not make sense that Dean would not believe in God or angels.  In the film series, "Blade", crosses, holy water, etc., did not affect the vampires, so it's not a stretch to think that characters in that series of films wouldn't necessarily believe in a god. In "Devil's Trap" "Azazel" (while possessing John and pinning the boys to the wall) says, "What are you and God gonna do?" That could be interpreted as a demon challenging God, therefore confirming the existence of same. 3. Sam says "These emails are very personal" but it looks like what he's really seeing are instant messages; a geek of Sam's stature would know better. 4. The priest quotes scripture and says, "They were terrified" - actually "Linus" of "Peanuts" fame said that line properly - "They were sore afraid". 5. Most priests (and parishioners) call priests by their first names, even when preceded with the title "Father" though using the last name isn't unheard of at all.

S2 Ep 14 "Born Under A Bad Sign"

1. Sam and Dean have way too easy a time getting private information - that whole "Justin Timberlake" thing by Dean would never have worked.  Ever.  But, that's not a major nit.  2. Shouldn't "Jo" think it's odd that Sam is calling his own father "John"?  Maybe she knows about their adversarial relationship, but that seems unlikely. "He was possessed?" With her family's background, not only should she have figured out he was possessed before Dean showed her, she shouldn't have sounded surprised either way.

S2 Ep 15 "Tall Tales"

Who can knock this one?  Not us. You can't stop laughing long enough to nitpick. The alien abduction scene alone is worth the price of admission.

S2 Ep 16 "Roadkill"

Once again the corporeal ghosts, a staple on this show. Other than that, another pretty good one for dodging nits.

S2 Ep 17 "Heart"

1. This woman, "Madison" has been mugged, sexually harassed by her boss, and stalked by her ex-boyfriend, yet she leaves a bar alone.  Then, she allows 2 "cops" to not only come in, but let one of them stick around, never being suspicious, despite saying she had already spoken with the cops. She folds skimpy underwear in front of a stranger. Well, at least the character herself said she was "stupid" - she is.  Where are all these overly trusting women they write for this show? 2. Sam has to shoot Madison, but of course when her body starts to decay, she'll be found. Anyone could have seen the Winchesters hanging around her, prior to her death. Here's your sign:

S2 Ep 18 "Hollywood Babylon"

1. For the sake of all actors, we sincerely hope crashing a movie set isn't that easy. 2. Once again, violent, mysterious deaths, and no vigorous investigation. That set would have been closed, especially after the second death.

S2 Ep 19 "Folsom Prison Blues"

 1. If Dean wants to incite fighting with an inmate, why risk serious injury or death by choosing the biggest, hulking, brutes? 2. They don't have any of their weapons or tools while inside - the things they usually do to track/repel/destroy ghosts weren't at their disposal. They knew the ghost was a killer, so it seemed a bit of a reckless plan. 3. We won't even go into how convoluted it would be to get those guys in and out of prison, especially with real criminal records hanging over their heads. Yet another...

S2 Ep 20 "What Is And What Should Never Be"

1. Weird that the Jinn didn't just make everything perfect in the alternate life for Dean. That would have kept him from being tipped off, it seems. But perhaps the idea is that the Jinn was being stretched too thin with all his victims at once, hence the girl appearing to Dean.

S2 Ep 21 "All Hell Breaks Loose Pt. 1"

1. Perhaps this "town" they're stuck in is actually a different dimension, which would be the only acceptable excuse for the place not being at least driven by.  That would also explain how "Ava" could have been there for so long without food.  Ditto the fact that they were just "popped" into this thing. 2. The (apparently) lesbian character ("Lily") in this one only fortified the stereotype that lesbians are hostile toward men. She was the least sympathetic character there, which is unfortunate, so the stereotype lives. 3. But what triggers the is her saying her touch kills.  Why would anyone be her girlfriend?  It does not seem possible that you could really have much of a relationship under those circumstances. Gloves? 4.  MISSED OPPORTUNITY ALERT: Biggest nit?  Killing off yet another great character, "Ash".  His death was pretty ambiguous, so we can hope he's not really gone. 5. Doesn't really make sense for Dean and Bobby to be able to find Sam, if this is an alternate reality, though, even with "Andy's" help. 'Azazel" obviously put them all there to isolate them, so why would he allow Dean and Bobby to go there? This isn't worthy of the , but it is a bit of a nit.

Small Kudos to the writers for realizing there's no way "Jake" could have stabbed Sam with such force, without superpowers.

S2 Ep 22 "All Hell Breaks Loose Pt. 2"

1. Seems out of character for "Ellen" to question being tested for possession.  She of all people should understand why it's necessary. 2. The appearance and disappearance of John Winchester was a terrible thing to do to those of us who miss him terribly!  Apparently, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is currently playing a ghost on "Grey's Anatomy" (as of December 2008) - it's ridiculous there, but would actually make sense on this show. He makes a vocal cameo later in this series, but that's very inadequate.
